Our Traditional Lime Putty is produced from selected large lumps of high purity calcitic limestone (CaO >98% - MgO <0.10) it is fired continuously for several days and nights in a traditional vertical kiln at temperatures below 1000° C. The lumps are washed before they are loaded into traditional design, wood fired vertical kilns fueled by wood waste from an adjacent mill. The firing chambers are designed so that the the limestone is not in contact with the flame to prevent over-burning the lime close to the heat source, and the ashes remain separate from the quicklime, resulting in a bright white putty measuring a blinding 97 to 98 Lumens! The result of this artisanal, small scale production is a bright white, dense, fat lime ideal for the preparation of mortars and plasters for historic masonry preservation, fresco and fine finishes. MADE IN ITALY

NOTE: Grassello di Calce is packaged into buckets directly from the aging vats and may possibly contain some small pieces of carbonated lime which occasionally fall from the equipment used to transfer the putty into the buckets. These are inert particles of carbonated lime, however they may be annoying if present in fine plasters and finish work. Garassello Di Calce can be screened for fine finishes , fresco “intonaco” and lime washes
This is testament to the artisanal production of our lime putty and in no way these inclusions are a detriment to its high quality.
These particles are actually welcome in preservation work as they resemble the under-burnt and over-burnt particles and lime clasts often present in original historic lime mortars.
For fine work Grassello di Calce can be screened in order to remove these particles, or select our Crema di Calce micronized lime putty.
