Our Traditional Lime Putty is produced from selected large lumps of high purity calcitic limestone (CaO >98% - MgO <0.10) it is fired continuously for several days and nights in a traditional vertical kiln at temperatures below 1000° C. The lumps are washed before they are loaded into traditional design, wood fired vertical kilns fueled by wood waste from an adjacent mill. The firing chambers are designed so that the the limestone is not in contact with the flame to prevent over-burning the lime close to the heat source, and the ashes remain separate from the quicklime, resulting in a putty measuring a blinding 97 to 98 Lumens! The result of this artisanal, small scale production is a bright white, dense, fat lime ideal for the preparation of mortars and plasters for historic masonry and plaster preservation, fresco and fine finishes.
