Renaissance Lime Putty
Superior quality traditionally produced lime putty, supplies and tools for Historic Preservation, and the Arts
We are committed to supplying the highest quality Lime Putty
Our mature lime putty is produced exclusively for historic masonry restoration, traditional decorative plaster and green building. Our Traditional Lime Putty is produced in Italy from 5 to 8 in. lumps of high purity calcitic limestone
(CaO >98%) - (MgO <0.10%) fired at low temperatures (900° C.) in indirect flame, natural draft, continuous production traditional design vertical kilns
fueled by wood waste from an adjoining lumber mill.
It is an indisputable fact that the use of Portland based cement in historic restoration applications causes accelerated and irreversible damage to historic structures due to their much higher compressive strength, low vapor permeability, modulus of elasticity, and the introduction of gypsum, harmful salts and alkali contaminating the original masonry.
Portland cement's inferior durability in new construction, poor adaptability and detrimental properties in restoration applications (presence of sulfites, alkali, toxic and radioactive substances) have spiked renewed interest in lime binders and the necessity to rediscover the traditional production methods and use of lime binders in restoration, green building and ultimately modern construction.
The quicklime is immediately slaked and aged in open-air pits for a minimum of one year, fully respecting traditional production methods.
This meticulous process results in a dense, fatty slaked lime ideal for Historic Masonry Restoration work, stucco, plaster, lime paints and fine finishes such as Fresco, Tonachino, Marmorino and Venetian Plaster.
Our natural lime putty is ANAB, ICEA certified in the EU (equivalent to: L.E.E.D. - U.S. green building council) as it does not contain any additives, polymers or additions of any kind.
Our slaked lime has been utilized for numerous prominent restoration projects in Europe and in the USA exclusively through our imports.
Lime Putty, also known as calcium hydroxide or slaked lime, mixed with aggregates and pozzolana has been the base for producing lime mortar for millennia and has stood the ultimate test of time.
The simple facts are that the original lime mortar with which structures were built with thousands of years ago still remains remarkably strong and uncompromised.
Portland based cements have gained wide use as a modern "improvement" since their introduction in the late 19th century, and unfortunately their embrace resulted in the traditional production and use of lime mortar to be nearly been abandoned.
These new products, including modern NHL’s have been ultimately proven, by an ever-growing number of scientists and practitioners, to fall short compared to traditional and ancient cements, and in addition, to be the cause of unwarranted and accelerated decay when utilized to restore historic masonry structures.
Environmental and health concerns are currently at the forefront due to the impact of climate change.
More than 4 billion tons of Portland cement were produced worldwide in 2021, contributing to a whopping 8% of global CO2 emissions!
Lime mortar on the other hand, cures by carbonation, by slowly re-absorbing the carbon dioxide released through production.
Replacing the use of Portland cement with lime mortars would result in a carbon footprint reduction of approximately 80%.
The virtues of slaked lime are many and the versatility of uses is unparalleled.
The same lime putty can be utilized to formulate mixes for concrete, lime mortar, renders, stucco, highly decorative finishes like Tonachino, Sgraffiato, Scagliola, Marmorino, Stucco Veneziano, Cocciopesto, Tadelakt, Affresco, lime paints and more.
Lime based finishes are hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-fungal, non toxic and furthermore allow the building to "breath" regulating the moisture levels in the air within a building and improving the health of its residents.
Lime mortar can also provide for insulating values, especially when used in combination with aggregates with insulating properties such as expanded clay and shale , pumice, grog, cork and other specialty aggregates.
With slaked lime, aggregates and pozzolana you can recreate traditional applications unmatched by modern counterparts in resilience and beauty, with ecologic and health benefits for the craftsman, artist and the environment.
We personally use Our lime putty, supplies and tools on a daily basis so we are confident that you will be satisfied!
